eat, pray, love your life

The movie, the book, Liz Gilbert—who doesn’t love it all? After all, this is the true story of a woman who realizes the life she signed up for wasn’t making her happy. Her life was misaligned with her being, her purpose, and the trajectory she wished her life would follow. That realization took her into a deep depression (indicated more strongly in the book than in the Hollywood movie).

She realized she was mismatched in her marriage and took the hard step of leaving it. She then tried to move forward into a new relationship, but this rebound wasn’t the answer either. She was still depressed and lost. However, this deep sadness eventually lead to her decision to embark on a year long journey away from her humdrum life. She needed find a spark in life, grieve, and open herself to new experiences. Her friend doubted that this journey would be the solution and wondered if Liz was just running from her problems. However, Liz knew what was best for her.

She practiced gratitude when savoring pizza from Napoli, grieved as she gave herself permission to say goodbye to her marriage in India, and opened her heart to a new love in Bali. At the end of her journey, we watch Liz as she ends up in a new chapter of her life, one that was far greater than she could have ever imagined when she was writhing in her post-divorce depression. Keep in mind, to get to a place of peace, growth, purpose, and success in love and career she had to “do the work,” as her dear friend from Texas taught her.
